I don't believe anyone is currently evaluating alternatives to the
current stack for tile.osm.org.
I think most of those who might are busy with vector tiles these days.
Sven Geggus and I found the problem(s) why the Multilingual Map didn't work and
fixed it. See http://mlm.jochentopf.com/ . This is only a demo so no promises
on the future of that map.

Hi Jochen and Sven,
how much additional disk space is approximately needed (compared to a
bg-map that includes one language rule)? Of course this value can only
be an approx. ratio. The absolute space depends on aoi, zoomlevels, ...

* As noted here before, Deleting the browser cache solves problems of name
tags not showing (for me too, that is)
* Would be even more neat if there was a way to also get loc_name,
alt_name, old_name, int_name in the list of alternatives
But in any case / even as is: a

You now have to explicitly tell it when you want to fall back to the name
tag. Use the underscore (_) to do this. For instance with fr you'll only
get the name:fr tag. With fr,_ you'll get name:fr and, if that

Maybe it would be possible to add {name:de} - {name:it} support to
the renderer's rule file, rather than putting these values in osm the
database?
For example, for osmarender, instead of having:
pathText k=name dy=2px class=piste-downhill-name
text-anchor=middle startOffset=75%/
We'll have:

Hi,
great stuff...
With my first go a couple of weeks back for 8 languages I did do
fallback to at least 'name' using views as suggested on the wiki,
setting this up for 40 languages however was somewhat less trivial and I
felt that there would be a benefit to being able to display languages

Hi folks,
I've been thinking about how it would be good to have the map available in
multiple languages... I think the easiest way to do this with what we have
is using a captionless base layer and transparent caption layers for each of

Very nice feature, would it be possible, by any chance, to add Catalan
names, tag name:ca. A lot of streetnames are mapped in two languages, both
in Spain as in France.

This is a great piece of work, and IMHO something needed on the main OSM site.
Might I make a few suggestions?
