f-droid crashes also. Maybe I will find an older version that works. I was able to install the 1.9, and 1.8 and 1.7 apk packages, but the 2.0 already causes a reboot. I think it would be ok to run the 1.x series, but is there a way to get the paid version without f-droid? Obviously the playstore

IMHO you are approaching this -slightly- wrong. In general the play store will not offer you apps that will not run on your system, so there is on the one hand either something wrong with the play store configuration if the version intentionally doesn't work with 2.3.6 -> you should be talking
