If you are asking if we are going to just dump a whole lot of data as is in
a region, the answer is no. Each tile is going to need manual work to
determine what data(adress, building outline, building+adress) and to
verify that the data is accurate

So these could possibly be carried out by regular user accounts, not the

Are there any examples from other exemptions that I can look at when I

I will repeat myself:
Yes, there is a reason I put this documentation in .md(mark down), as it is
the same format used by the wiki. So all information that is found on
github will be transferred over to the wiki once local approval is done.

Posting on the talk-ca is to get the local community's approval before
moving on to the imports list

Here it is in German, just in case:
Ja, es ist ein Grund, warum ich diese Dokumentation in .md (mark down), wie es

Veröffentlichung auf der Diskussions-ca ist die lokale Gemeinde die

2016-09-08 Thread john whelan
Good heavens and I thought guidelines meant guidelines not that must do
everything that someone has written in the wiki.

I think perhaps the use of I would suggest the following in carried out as
recommended in the wiki would go a lot further on the community side of
things as opposed to thou shalt etc. and we are supposed to be a community.

Re: [Talk-ca] [Import] Local community approval building & addresses in Peel region

2016-09-08 Thread Kevin Farrugia
That was addressed in James' previous email after Stewart asked about it.

"Yes, there is a reason I put this documentation in .md(mark down), as it
is the same format used by the wiki. So all information that is found on
github will be *transferred over to the wiki once local approval is done.*"

I wouldn't say that's unreasonable from my standpoint - if the local
(Canadian) community decides not to approve then we don't make dead wiki
pages.

Also to follow up on the *"**ensure that Your Use of the Information does
not breach or infringe upon any applicable laws" *I think it can also
applied in the sense: Canada has banned displaying public addresses on
websites/to be viewed from the public(I know this is not the case, but this
is an example) so you wouldn't be able to use it in OSM as it can be
displayed to the public.

A more realistic case would be must not list military zones/addresses, but
there's no law against it in Canada. This isn't North Korea.

2016-09-08 Thread Kevin Farrugia
Hey all,

I'm the person at Peel that works with GIS data and posts data up to the
open data site so I can probably answer most questions that might come up.

1) I can look into having some sort of change or special case of the
licence for OSM if it is a show stopper, but the bureaucracy can move very
slowly so it's nice avoiding it when possible ;). I'm not sure what the
process would be for changes so I can't say what timelines would be like,
either.

I'll be at mappy hour next week after my couple month hiatus so no need to
invite anyone special. :)

Seems like a decent outline, though I have questions:

   1. Is the Region of Peel licence compatible? I see that it has automatic
termination on breech (like many OGL clones) but it also adds "ensure that
Your Use of the Information does not breach or infringe upon any applicable
laws". This may add usage implications for those downstream.
(Some folks from Peel came to a Toronto Mappy Hour a few years back.
They might be willing to give permission to use the data under an
   ODbL-compatible licence.)
   2. How will you be handling overlapping existing buildings?
   3. Will you be posting these notes to the OSM wiki? It's a requirement
   of the guidelines (

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Guidelines#Step_4_-_Documentation),
and given the recent visibility than Canada imports have gained, might help
   avoid a procedural reversion.

[Talk-ca] ImproveOSM new beta

2016-09-08 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

I don’t know how familiar you are with ImproveOSM. It’s Telenav’s big data
thrown at OSM. We detect missing roads, missing turn restrictions, and one-way
streets. There is a JOSM plugin as well as a web site.

The web site is what I wanted to highlight. We are about to overhaul it and
it’s now completely based off of iD. You can find the beta version here:
http://osm-id.skobbler.net:8000

What I would really like is more feedback from mappers. Is this useful and
usable? What are the top 5 things you would improve or do differently?

As always your feedback is extremely valuable, and helps inform what the end
product will look like.

Respond on this thread, file an issue on
https://github.com/Telenav/improveosm.org/issues (no source there yet) or
email me directly.

Many thanks,
Martijn
