Okay, but isn't the ultimate goal of this to get the shields on the map,
for the whole world to see? I mean, if I was the one doing this, I wouldn't
consider this a finished project until it was on the Standard (Mapnik)
layer on openstreetmap.org, integrated into the Carto stylesheet. To be
Country or region specific styles will have a hard time making it to
the main osm.org layer I have a feeling, just because it makes the
stylesheet more complex and there's only so many eyes on it. It would
add a bunch of assets to the site that would only be used for U.S.
rendering - and then

it seems like there are a lot of issues
I don't think the extra complexity of the shields slows down the time it
takes to render them. But the tiles themselves on the shield map take way
longer to load than on osm.org (which is why I really want the shields on
the main OSM website), which I guess is because of a slower tileserver.
