showing unread messages on the ticker causes The Bat! to
hang.
I guess the window parameters of the ticker got disturbed.
What config file should I check to correct them?

I've now discovered that the problem is related to the
spell checker. If I use the spell checker before sending the
message, it will effectively go. Looks a bug to me. Anyway I
have my work around now - it was great talking to you g
