I’ll announce part 2 of the continuing article on Sheck when it comes out next
week. Hopefully that won’t spur another advertisement for purchasing something
somewhat related to Sheck’s life in an effort to boost AMCS sales. This was
intended to be a remembrance of Sheck’s life and
I y'all would like to read more about Sheck Exley's exploration of
Nacimiento del Río Mante and other nacimientos in the El Abra Region, get
AMCS Bulletin 26, which was published a few months ago. There is a map of
Nacimiento del Río Mante from one of Sheck´s books. Appendix 4 is a
detailed table
Sheck was able to accomplish so much because of an almost robotic certainty
that if he did something correctly he would prevail. That works well until the
world dishes up something unexpected such as an accident.
Sometime during the mid 70s my future ex wife Lema and I had gone to Texas for
Good memories.
On my way to the caves around Valles, Aquismon and Xilitla, I would often
stop for a swim at Nacimiento near Ciudad Mante Tamaulipas in the late 80's
early 90's, where Sheck did his world record dive in 1988.
We would tread water within the cave portion of the spring and wonder &
PS: We currently spending a week near Los Fresnos, birding not caving - but in
Texas :-)
