Although Mr. Esterson will probably disagree, I believe "The White Hotel" by
D.M. Thomas is an excellent novel that is expository of Freud's thinking and
its historical implications. Also, there is a good article from Thomas in the
British Medical Journal regarding the relationship of his novel
Well, it's only "novel-like" and would be a stretch for maybe personality or
theories of counseling but Girl, Interrupted, which is the basis for the film,
is a pretty good read for students.

I'm not sure it is general enough for Personality but, "The Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night-Time" by Haddon is pretty good in its presentation of
Autism/Aspergers. Of course, the inaccuracies would also lead to good
discussion. I did find the autobiographical "Send in the Idiots" by Na
I taught "Autobiography of a Face" by Lucy Grealy once, and students liked it a
lot. This would be good for either social or health. "Muscle: Confessions of an
Unlikely Bodybuilder," by Samuel Fussell, is also a truly amazing read and
might be good for any of the classes.
