I just retired with emeritus status. I don't know what it means other than
having a guaranteed front row seat at Board of Control meetings. Oh joy. On
another note, how many of you have a retired faculty member on your board of
control (trustees) rather than all business people?

Her goal is to get a grade she didn't earn. I used to give a student their
scantron sheet and a copy of the test showing where in the text the question is

What I find interesting is that so many "classic" experiments in many areas of
psych would be prohibited today. But, what do I know? Psychology is the only
discipline that I am aware of that has the conceit to consider itself no longer
in need of basic research, an attitude that I believe has lo
My advice to avoid these problems is to put on your syllabus that "no extra
work will be permitted at the end of the semester in order to raise your

been that many students aim for the minimum scores to get the grade th

My favorite comment was "Pisacreta sucks. I had to study every week in order to
get a decent grade"
Once a student asked me if I had to raise their grade if my dept. head or dean
ordered it.

All tenure means here is that you don't have to go through annual review by the dept.
If you just coast after you get tenure, you won't get promotions. We also have a 3
year tenure review process. Tenure means nothing if you committ serious crimes, e.g.,
sell drugs to students, commit a felony,
My college uses the same criteria for promotion to full professor to be eligible for
merit. It is handled by a faculty admin committee, the promotion/merit committee, and

Its done reasonably here. The promotion/merit comittee (7 faculty, 2 dept. heads)

I give a one essay question, five minute quiz on the chapter we are about to start.
They have the quiz questions in advance. They are the learning objectives for the

quizzes count for 20% of their letter grade
What I find horrifying is that this instument, IQ tests, with all their admitted and

I am at one of those schools that annually publishes faculty and administrative
