I give a one essay question, five minute quiz on the chapter we are about to start. They have the quiz questions in advance. They are the learning objectives for the chapter. So they have about 20 questions, one of which will be the quiz question. The quizzes count for 20% of their letter grade so students who don't do assignments and just cram for tests can get a B- at best. It works. Most students take notes on thw quiz questions and review them before the quiz. There is more class discussion because they are prepared.
