I don't really follow what your problem is, and you must be using
terminfo or tmux wouldn't work (it can't use termcap).
What exactly do you have in your prompt? Do echo $PS1|cat -v
Or in the code colours are updated in the grid then actually applied to
the screen in tty.c, look at tty_attributes
