Actually, I don't find the Touch to be faster than the Classic in the
majority of the navigation tasks I get it to do. The ability to jump to
albums or artists starting with a chosen letter is common to both the
Touch and Classic. (like selecting a letter when typing an SMS on a
mobile)

Replaygain tags and SmartGain would address your volume consistency
issue. That's what they're for :-). It's not normalising in the
conventional sense. Tracks from the same album are untouched. You
should try that

I just checked your process on my Touch... I get no lag on point 4 - the
response is sub-second.
Point 7 was a MUCH requested enhancement... however some people wanted
it to be an option IIRC.
Point 9 takes 2 seconds on my setup.
