I have a Synology DS213j (two disks). The fan is extremely silent, 17dB can't be heard from one meter away. And the fan also automatically turns off when it's cool enough. However, with my two 3.5" disks inside it, it's quite noisy! The disks themselves doesn't produce so much of a noise, but the

Thank you for your answers. 'Dedicated' is a misnomer I guess - I just mean't that this was all I would use the NAS for ie storing my music files on and accessing them from my SBT. I can get this (Synology ds112j) quite quickly from Curry's locally (Cumbria): http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/comput

By "dedicated" you mean an NAS that will only run LMS (aka SBS) and nothing else - then why bother with a NAS - just get a Raspberry Pi (or similar small computing device) and put LMS on it. If you have <300 albums depending on the encoding you might be able to to put all your albums on a Flash d

I take it the the "inthelakes" part of your username is referring to The Lake District in Cumbria. All the recommendations are for UK suppliers. I have been using one of these for a few years now and it hasn't missed a beat http://www.amazon.co.uk/ZyXEL-NSA310-Network-Storage-Closure/dp/B005LDM09

Yes, you would have to install LMS on the NAS. You can get LMS pre-installed on some NASs, and on others installation is reasonably straightforward. At the other extreme installation could require a lot of hacking, or even be impossible. So you would have to choose your NAS wisely. There are tons

Very sorry but I do not appear to be very good at searching! For the past couple of years I have been using my SBT networked to my Laptop which has SBS installed on it. I would now like to use my SBS with a dedicated NAS. My music collection is small ie <300 albums and is not likely to grow sig
