Many of us have been begging for such a change for several years, to no
avail. Nirvana was almost achieved with Party Mode, but it never got
out of the beta stage and no longer works with current versions of SBS.

Yeah, that can be annoying. Not only does such an inadvertent screen
tap stop the current playback it also wipes out the playlist you were
building.
A suggestion of adding a user selectable safety feature was brought
up but it was never implemented that I know of.

That is a very nice feature indeed. :)
That is what is missing from the Touch. Or in some way prevent
accidental Touch touch's from wiping out ones Playlist. :(

I had the Touch for months now, and I still have trouble with adding
Albums or individual tracks.
I'll have to read the Feature Guide. Hmmm... It seems you CAN'T add a
single track. From page 10: Note: When you select a song that is part
of the album, the entire album becomes part of your
