Yes, what you want is exactly what SBT is all about. The only

I was trying to do this myself with my laptop - for weekends 'away'. I
got stuck in that I wasn't able to set up an 'ad-hoc' wireless network
- I needed server software that included DHCP services. I don't
remember why static IP's wasn't tried...

The easiest way to do it is to install the server software on your
laptop and let it control the device. This alows you to play anything
the server can play (which is pretty much anything) to the device.
To also hear what is playing through the laptop speakers you need
SqueezePlay or SqueezeSl
