I agree entirely. Unfortunately economics doesn't always back the
technical winner. Betamax v VHS as a notable example.

One of the problems is that Touch has only 128mB of ram one no swap .
Some clever dude did a mod to let the Touch swap onto the attached
memory card or attached USB thing . No plugins and no web UI makes it
unusable anyway .mand prolly the image processing a would be so and so

Agreed, really solid when you have a server!
I always thought a reasonable compromise might be to show the Folder
view only when attaching a disk, instead of it sitting there building an
entire database!

I do not think there is anything definitive on this topic. There are
just too many variables within any given library.
I ran my Touch that way for about a year. My attached drive probably had
in the neighborhood of 20K tracks at that point. Nothing but problems
and any time the Touch was powered
Touch is running 7.7.3 and connected to the Internet and mySb account,
which means it's running current sw versions...
Admittedly the USB i attached is pretty loaded (I have a large library).
LMS media server will just not run hosted on the Touch, it will crash
regularly and seemingly never quite
