Mainly scanning, yes.
In the past I also had the server's database located on the NAS, that
was probably not a good idea, latency plays a role there along with
bandwidth.
But if you have a normal computer running the server it should not be a
problem to have the database on the computer and just m

Which things will slow down? Scanning is understandable, since the
server is reaching over the network for the metadata and album art, but

Actually I second that.
I'm doing the same thing and this way I get the best of both worlds: a
NAS with really fast disc access and a server with decent performance. I
also all of a sudden have no problems with powering down the hard drives
anymore, they go to sleep when the server stops using the

the NAS, to get decent performance you often have to

software. It now sits in the hallway attached to the router.I'm
impressed.It has the added benefit of including LMS and it also rips
CDs.It's quick and slick and I like it.

Sure, no problem.
I'm not so good at recommending NASs, my server runs on a dedicated
application server. But a lot of people are happy with Synology, QNap
and the latest ReadyNAS models (the v2 ones). Just make sure you don't
get the smallest model, CPU and RAM wise or things might get slow
