Mainly scanning, yes.
In the past I also had the server's database located on the NAS, that
was probably not a good idea, latency plays a role there along with
bandwidth.
But if you have a normal computer running the server it should not be a
problem to have the database on the computer and just mound a remote
drive.

Then it's really just scanning - unless you plan to stream stuff like
lossless HD stream to half a dozen of devices simultaneously, then at
some point bandwidth can become an issue, too.

Wifi is still a bad idea for anything beyond a single device or mp3
streaming. Bandwidth need grows exponentially with the number of streams
(because WiFi is half-duplex and can't avoid collisions) . And with all
devices on WiFi streaming from a NAS with the server on another computer
to a Squeezebox amounts to actually 4 streams which usually means you'll
on average need 8 times the gross bandwidth of the raw stream. So a
mostly harmless 44.1/16 FLAC stream reduces your bandwidth by around 11
MBit and a 96/24 steam will consume a whopping 36 MBit. For ONE device!
