Fair enough! That does make sens

Where did you learn this audiophool nonsense?
We're talking TCP/IP packet data (that's right - network data
transmission), and as long as the cable installation is within

And as I have a switch in my hifi system the Ethernet cable length as
seen by my Touch is 1meter even if the server is across the apartment
.
So even if this where a problem ( which it is not ) you could just add
a switch and it would be fixed.

Can I connect a server directly to the Touch without a router?

Well, I was considering getting one of those really tiny eco server
things (they're silent too) to just sit on the shelf next to my Touch,
with a couple of hard drives plugged into it.
I would ra

yes but why ? there are many ways to design a functioning network,
using a router is one of them and by far the easiest, configure point
to point communication is possible however the in

I am trying to understand this but am not sure I am getting it. You have
a network setup that you choose to shutdown for periods of time, perhaps
to save electricity ? You have your HDD w music files attached to the
Touch itself and want to use it wo turning on your router/network.I am

Interesting - thanks for the reply. I didn't realise that was a bug that
had been fixed. I'm having issues now with the local music server
stopping for some unknown reason, but I guess it's just the same old
crappy buggy Touch issues that everyone has from time to time, and
nothing to do with the
Touch is two things internally a Squeezeboxplayer and a Squeezeboxserver
.
When you run it standalone the two happens to be on the same box, the
Tiny server can actually stream to other players on your network just
as the Touch player can conect to another server.
And then the whole internet rad
how old fw are you running this should be fixed long ago if not try to
reopen the bug.

Sorry for such a naive (probably very old) question, but after much
Googling I cannot find the answer.
Can anyone explain why, when the SB Touch is being used in *standalone
mode* (using tiny server or Logitech server, or whatever it's called
these days) the router needs to be switched on? Does t
