Thank you for all the great information. It is very helpful.
So let me ask this: Could someone please tell me what currently
available externally powered hard drive, 1TB minimum capacity, meets
the above outlined criteria so I will only have to buy a hard drive
I don't know but it has one thing going for it.
it has *it's own powersupply* and would not bog down the 5.0v from the
USB connector on the Touch this is crucial for success as most USB
powered discs break the spec (without telling you, disc mfg cheats) and
the Touch can supply up the USB spec
MNBY is correct. Any USB drive that acts or mimics a CD Drive when
plugged in is one to stay away from. Any USB drive that is over energy
conscience and can't have those features turned off is one to stay away
from. Drives that sleep between each drive access are ones to stay away
from. Large USB
I've got a bunch of Western Digital drives and the one thing I can't
stress enough is to disable that stupid, stupid WD Smatware. I hate,
hate, hate that they put that partition that acts like a cd and takes
away space I could actually use. So plug it into a computer and see if
you end up with 2

Why not just reparation and reformat stupid smartware gone ? then you
get that space back.
It's not that easy, but it can be done:

Thanks, looks like what I was looking for. They sure don't make it easy
that's for sure.
Be careful. I can't tell for certain from the writeup whether you lose
the data in the larger partition, but I'd be wary. Make sure you have a
copy of the data and be prepared
Yeah, I figured if I did it, it would be when I first got an empty
drive. It is almost guaranteed that it would wipe the whole drive. But
at least it is an option after disabling the SmartWare to finally get
rid of it.

I have been reading the forum for a couple weeks now doing research on
what works and what doesn't but I can't seem to find a current list of
externally
Most of the problems people have had with particular external drives are
with bus powered 2.5 drives where the Touch is unable to supply enough
power. That's a 3.5 drive with its own power supply, so it shouldn't
present a problem.
