Happened to me too when I updated my vivid system after a few weeks
again.
I still have upstart-bin (1.13.2-0ubuntu9) from before the transition to
upstart installed and tried to upgrade it.
init-system-helpers has a Replaces/Breaks on the transitioned upstart
package but not on the upstart-bin f

package init-system-helpers 1.22ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: trying to
overwrite '/lib/init/apparmor-profile-load', which is also in package
initramfs-tools already depends busybox-initramfs. What's missing is the hook
to symlink bin/chroot to busybox in the initrd.
Supporting /sbin/init being a symlink was not fixed for all cases in bug
#1351295. There was only a readlink symlink added but the chroot call in the

After switching to systemd permanently (apt get install systemd-sysv) and
purging the now not needed "upstart" package, I tried to boot with the upstart
fallback option in grub, just to find out it doesn't work.

permanently switching to systemd.
I've switched to systemd with "apt install systemd-sysv --purge" (it only
purged the upstart package) and with the default "Ubuntu" entry the boot fails
