I have the same problem. If the launcher is set to auto-hide, it's impossible to open it with a touchscreen (on Unity 7, Ubuntu 14.10). I would expect that sliding the finger from the outside of the left edge of screen to the inside causes the launcher to open. For consistency, the exact

The gesture for opening the hidden launcher in Unity 7 is a four-finger horizontal swipe (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multitouch for more gestures). This works well on all of my test hardware. We have no plans to retrofit Unity 8 UI designs onto Unity 7. ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu)
