I got the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS running on a Lenovo Ideapad
s145 - processor: Intel® Core™ i3-8130U CPU @ 2.20GHz × 4
Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio (rev 21)
Subsystem: Lenovo Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
Seems the problem is worsened with new kernel in 18.04.

After the last update, no more audio cards are detected, but `lspci` says:

Here the same with a Thinkpad T570. The low sound appeared after
upgrading from 17.10 to 18.04 or 18.04.1.
