It's crazy how easy it is to lose little bits of information like when you
first started using Linux. Looking at some mail archives i know for sure i
was using as my "daily driver" at home by 1998, and at work by 1999. I
used the early versions of Caldera Open Linux, and then later regretted it
For me it was 1993 using Slackware with a .91 kernel. A bazillion
floppies (or maybe 35) as Brad said. Had to customize/rebuild the kernel
a lot. Making uucp work was my first goal as I recall. This was on a
40MHz AMD 386. Printing was an additional adventure, and sound another
one. I
I started around 1999 I think, downloading RedHat over modem. It took forever.
So I started buying the books with CD's in them. It was the best move I ever
made to understand Computing and Operating Systems. It opened me to the world
of serious computing ideas, and I started to understand how
Thanks Pete. It was a memorable time... I had a Slackware distribution
in the late 1990's. Still have the multi-cd distribution medium.
