We mentioned HandBrake in another thread and the fact that it includes some
non-free code for AAC encoding.
A fully free (as far as I can tell) version of HandBrake exists in Debian
Experimental. I tried to install the .deb package in Brigantia but couldn't

Till now? What's the new perfect distro, then?
TRISQUEL IS THE PERFECT DISTRO TILL NOW COMPARED TO OTHERS. TRY IT AND YOU
WILL SEE.
For people having a better government, I recall that libdvdcss can be easily
obtained. Just fire this command in a terminal:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs are perfectly fine. /Encrypted/ DVDs don't work (and unfortunately many
DVDs are encrypted) without a program that at least my government has
censored (like DeCSS), but as far as I'm aware, Ubuntu has no ability to do
any better in this department.
I've played multiple dvd's on trisquel. No idea where that nonsense came
from.
I also read something about "not being able to play your DVDs". I haven't
actually tried in Trisquel, but libdvdread4 seems to be installed by default.
I recall Ubuntu leaving that package out of their distro by default. And a
similar situation with Fedora.

Some of the comments dismissing Trisquel are sad because they show clearly
that the person commenting has never tried Trisquel, but spreads
misinformation nevertheless (e.g. 'you won't be able to listen to your
mp3s').
Trisquel mentioned on Slashdot today:

The default DE, GNOME, has font rendering settings that can be found:
* In Applications Menu,
* System Settings,
* Advanced Settings,
* Fonts section on the left.
You can change your hinting and antialiasing options from here to suit your
screen.

Not all licenses using this term are GPL-incompatible, see
e.g. https://gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#CeCILL (most are, the
reasons to use this term and to make GPL-incompatible licenses are
probably correlated).

There are obvious things that its maintainer could do if he wanted it to
Maybe you need to install better fonts,
http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=ttf- lists some.
There are various hinting-related options of fontconfig that change how
the fonts look, your DE probably has settings for it (or look in
/etc/fonts).
Maybe you have some screenshots to compare i
I just tried trisquel and I liked the desktop. However, the fonts & font
rendering seems to be not that good, especially when I compare to font & font
rendering on ubuntu desktop.
I have also noticed that debian has very bad fonts and after years of waiting
the situation does not seem to im
My suggestion for you:
Backup ALL your data and install a FRESH 6.0 version. Good luck.
I stand corrected. Sorry for the silly interjection.
(And what a funny thing to have, wonder why they bothered...)
Sorry to revisit and old thread (for which no one replied) but I ran "sudo
update-manager -d" to update 4 to 4.5 and was unable to do so. Gave me an
error about missing packages.
I hope 4 to 6 update is possible. :-(
Abrowser in the Ubuntu repos is a transitional package that installs Firefox.
Trisquel's repos offer a complete unbranded package.

Not so.

In that case you need to make a xorg.conf file. What kind of graphics card do
you have there?
You can use this command to find out: (it's case sensitive)
lspci -nn|grep VGA
There is, somewhere in the "System Settings", an icon related to configuring
the display. It should list the possible resolutions given you screen and
your graphical card (which is?).
