I just tried to run ifconfig in 5.5.
$ ifcongig
Got an error: command not found. I then tried:
$ /sbin/ifconfig
Worked just fine. I thought that ifconfig was a basic
command to use. Why is it not included to the $PATH ?
It didn't work because the command contains a typo. Notice the command was
ifcongig (notice it has a g instead of an f)
I have no time now, I will try later the new kernel, and I hope it will fix
the problem. Yes, I really think that is recognized as mouse and not
touchpad...
And for the automatic change of brightness?

My music files are the source of my dad's LP collection of Jazz, over 60
years worth of collected LP's. Imagine this, he is retired already and still
collecting. It does occupied, 2 tetrabyte hard drives and four 500 drives.
That is lot of good old jazz! probably no one has ever
Hi JaqLondres!
The reason why your wireless card does not want to work is that it
[http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k requires Linux 3.2 or
later]. You can either install the latest Linux-libre kernel from PPA or
upgrade to Trisquel 6.0 Toutatis when it is ready.
Probably has to do with how the users and the admins used to be separate in
the days of mainframes. A PC is a relatively new phenomenon.
/sbin is for system binaries, it is in the root path.

And for the automatic change of brightness?
The laptop mode tools could be the answer if you can change brightness in
software. Let's see:
What's the output (if any) of ls /sys/class/backlight/
It says intel_backlight and it's coloured in light blue
Choose manual setup on the installer page where you are given the
options like 'install Trisquel along-side Windows' and 'replace Windows
with Trisquel'. I think the option you want says 'something
else--manual setup'. Select your drive, and partition as you prefer.
On 01/13/2013 08:12
In the intel_backlight folder there is a file named brightness. cat its value
and then change the brightness and cat again. Does this number change? Try
changing the number.
sudo sh -c echo X /path/to/file where X is some number
Does the brightness change when you change the number?
Yea- the way free software is maintained differs from most (all?) proprietary
systems. You need to really buy hardware with support already taken care of.
And I don't just mean that a driver exists. I mean that it has the chipsets
which have a driver that have hit mainline and are now
HI CHRIS...sorry it took so long, but what a hassle this was...
it's long so i am attaching the file, ok?
i have a Belkin wireless N router and Belkin USB adapter on that computer
which is an HP A820N Pentium4 i believe.
Is it possible to either make the bottom bar narrower or even better,
autohide it?
Hi! (Sorry for my English)
Which version of Trisquel have you installed? If you have the 5.5 one you can
do it by clicking Alt+right click on the mouse. But if you have the 6.0 I
don't know beacuse I had the same problem. These combination doesn't work for
me. I hope that issue can be
Trisquel 6 uses Compiz by default. For change the GNOME Fallback Panel you
need to press Alt+Super(Windows)+right click. Without compiz (GNOME Classic
without effects in GDM login screen) the Alt+right click works.
I'm sorry. I thought this was built-in wireless you were trying to get
working.
You'll need to post the output from the command:
lsusb
ok here it is:
trisquel@trisquel:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
So your problem is that the chipset is not free software compatible. As a
result it won't work on Trisquel. There are a few USB chipsets that will
though: RTL8187, RTL8187B, and RTL8187L, (these USB chipsets support G) and
AR9170 (supports N although I'd suggest the prior chipsets).
There
Thanks, I'm exploring other releases of Linux-libre. BTW, in Trisquel Bash
there is no 'make' command?
Make isn't part of BASH. Install the package called build-essential.
Sorry about the typo. My bad. But I really tried to run just
ifconfig
and it did not work. It really seems to be in the root path.
sudo ifconfig
and
# ifconfig
run just fine. Thanks for the help.
Hi JaqLondres!
Make is a separate program. If you don't have it, you can install the package
suggested by jxself.
Also, please note that we don't call Trisquel Linux because linux is just a
kernel not an OS. We call Linux GNU/Linux. Trisquel is just one of
GNU/Linux distributions (which
I checked the Trisquel forums and someone suggested trying to install without
an internet connection. I will attempt this.
Yes, the number change when I change the brightness and the brightness change
if I change the number...
Wait a minute...
Why can a regular user access ifconfig with
/sbin/ifconfig
If it is supposed to be only used by root?
