In the "System settings", there are two entries that deal with languages. One for the language of the applications and another one for the keyboard layout (mainly).

removing compton makes it a little snappier but then I find my screen flickers (boards of the screen) each time I open something from the panel and it is very annoying.. Better to keep it. The performance gain is minimal anyway

My understanding of the AMD line-up is that they too are shipping with similar features so I wouldn't exactly suggest jumping to AMD. It would probably be best to avoid x86 altogether, but it's not without its difficulties.

system settings - language support - try changing the "keyboard input system" from "ibus" to "none". That solved my keyboard problems, although they were of a different nature..
