Try to comment the definition of GRUB_GFXMODE:
$ sudo sed -i 's/^GRUB_GFXMODE/#&/' /etc/default/grub
Apply the change:
$ sudo update-grub
Reboot and see whether the splash screen is shown.

Could alternatively be that the browser's cache is full ... when I empty the
cache, things start to work again for me ... not just the browser.
