yeah, because the difference between a kernel that has 0 proprietary firmware
and another one that has 0 proprietary firmware is absolutely
Basically, if you have the proprietary firmware file (the one that has been
removed by deblobbing), it will work in Debian's kernel, but not Linux-libre,
because Linux-libre doesn't know to look for that file. This is a
long-standing Linux-libre bug.
Ok. I'm not sure I undertstand what you mean by "unintended side effect of
making it impossible to load said proprietary firmware." though.
How far/close did you get?
BTW, I'm trying to install IceCat from a tarball. I would expect to see a
.deb file for installation but there is none. How/what do I install?
Ha ha. That is still an unsolved problem. I've been struggling for so
long time now. I just wrote Leah Rowe to ask for further/clearer instructions
If you have used Full Disk Encryption, let me know how you got it to boot.
It mostly works fine for me, with one exception,
it did me no harm, but before you accept it as the only kernel make sure you
are
satisfied and reboot once also...
also follow jxself's instructions completely especially the libreboot part!
since
you are also using it.
Thanks. I might try that, once I've gotten my librebooted machine to work.
Is it cumbersome to install linux libre?
actually, yes and no! the nonfree parts are disabled by default. but if you
want it to truly be free in every sense than do what I did.
Are you telling me, that my kernel is (probably) not free?
Yes agreed, don't make a franken-debian... is in the debian guide but I am
too lazy to look it up. so meh...
This is all fine.
Congratulations, you *are* running a free OS :).
If you want to install Trisquel on that computer, I don't why there would be
a problem installing it along Debian in a dual-boot setup, but I have no
first-hand experience with Libreboot or your type of computer, so someone
pretty sure meh means indifference,
but on an unrelated note,
I am currently using debian but with one catch!
linux libre 4.1! thanks Jxself!

meh?
I opened a terminal in the folder where the flashrom file is. Wouldn't that
give the same result?
I thought you were going to say something about destroying all nonfree
software and taking over the world to make it libre...
;p
Replace "flashrom" in that command with the full path to flashrom.
For example: /home/GNUbahn/Downloads/libreboot_util/flashrom
Thanks.

> I suspect it's more that Ruben is preoccupied with his job at the FSF
The aim here is to not have suspicions, guess's or any other speculation(s)
but rather have real answers to our demands on the behalf of Ruben & the
FSF,in this case the next release of Trisquel 8
If you want to help Trisquel's development specifically, donating to Trisquel
can help. Though in this case, like I said before, I suspect it's more that
Ruben is preoccupied with his job at the FSF (probably due to the recent loss
of a staff member), than that he's short on money. Donating
I am new here and simple novice in Trisquel for about 4 months. I like
trisquel a lot because it is free, and not a bad distro at all from my
relatively lay point a view. A point of view of somebody that was using mint
from about 2 years.
But what I would like to say is that maybe the
A default installation of Debian only has the main repository in its source
list, and is a free OS. Do not manually add the contrib or non-free
repositories, and you'll be fine. To make sure you only have main, let us
see the content of /etc/apt/sources.list and we'll tell you if
For the time being and for annoying reasons I'm stuck with Debian on my
Librebooted x200.
I am not sure whether I am then running a free OS. If I understand FSF
correctly, this can be obtained by un-installing or disabling Debians 'main'
and 'contrib' repositories
It would be nice if there were more updates on progress, but t3g, you know
just as well as I do that nothing has changed here. If anything, Ruben
communicated much less about the development of Trisquel 6 and Trisquel 7. In
fact, it looks to me like the reason is exactly the same now as it
People bashed me in the past for this, but the lack of communication from
Ruben and the lack of any progress has many worried about this distro. People
shouldn't have to hound him on IRC to get an update. He needs to follow
through. Posts like these just reinforce the faith that is being
Are Abrowser and IceDove out of date? Those are the only packages not taken
care of upstream, IIRC.
Parabola is a great choice! I am a longtime user and it never disappointed.
>I'm a bit confused about what you could hope to achieve by emailing the FSF.
If you ask this to me: nothing, I usually don't hope, that way I stay
optimistic.. As I said I am just a messenger of a proposal I agree with in
that it won't hurt and might help a bit.
>Are you asking them to
I'm hoping that they can do something to reinvigorate the project and bring
it back into a virtuous cycle where people help out working on it because
they believe in it and sees progress being made. I have the feeling we are
currently in a vicious cycle.
This is great! I back this mail wholeheartedly. I too have been very worried
about the lack of development in Trisquel. I use it as the main system on my
laptop and would like to continue doing so.
As for what we expect FSF to do about the state of affairs I'm not quite
sure. But some sort
Indeed, HTML5 Video Everywhere is one of the best add-ons.
Personaly, as a free/libre software activist myself, I would recommend
one of the following combinations:
* GNU LibreJS (to block only non-free software that is silently
installed by the site makers on your browser. LibreJS also
I'm a bit confused about what you could hope to achieve by emailing the FSF.
Are you asking them to pay Ruben to work on it? Or possibly asking them to
give him more free time? It could be that neither of these are possible.
Besides, it would be more effective to contribute to Trisquel's
