Here's Mint's corresponding detail.
Time concerns allowing, please take a look at missing icons will you.

A minor detail: it should be libcanberra-gtk-module.
This probably is either an error or some sort of joke or better yet, for when
it becomes eol for real.
I succeeding in installing it on my netbook so yeah your probably right.
Even with only free software, a PPA can raise issues when it comes to
upgrading the distribution. That is, for instance the PPA that was
problematic in my case:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-toolchain-r/+archive/ubuntu/test
I use GNOME but I am pretty sure Trisquel's default environment was printing
those messages as well because common programs, such as 'gksu', were.
Yes ask him to purge every nonfree PPA components thanks?
Parabola is also incompatible against AUR, A is stood for nonfree Arch, plus
Parabola has own PCR, Parabola's community repo, if PCR is available in
Trisquel I will be happy. Due to EFI-BIOS I can always install and run a

Canberra? Seems to be an GNOME app as of my slight research. But what is your
desktop thanks? LXQt? GNOME? Unity shell? Cinnamon? MATE? Xfce? LXDE?
As for GNOME, Unity, Cinnamon, MATE that shouldnt be a problem, just to
perform a dist-upgrade then try again.
As for LXQt, it's dependent on no
It is supported until 2021.
Well, as far as I understand, you do not run Trisquel 7 anymore. Like I
wrote, you should save (e.g., on an external drive) the system configuration
files (in /etc) you changed, the list of packages you installed (e.g., with
the menu "File/Save Markings" of the "Synaptic Package Manager")
Is there a simple and reliable way to back up to the previous 7.0 system?
Something has happened to my audio buffering, probably due to the
inconsistent system state, and it would be good to start with a known working
state.
There is also a very puzzling message at
http://in.archive.trisquel.info/trisquel/dists/flidas/EOLReleaseAnnouncement.html
claiming that
"Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 'flidas' is NO LONGER SUPPORTED! "
This comes up in a search for information about the 8.0 upgrade, so perhaps
this page is not
Oh, I get the dark screen when running that command!
On the journal thing, don't have time now but I will find a way to copy it
and paste it here. I am the kind of basic user who uses GUI for almost
everything...
Thanks for following up!
Thanks, added to the metapackages.
Thanks for pointing this out, I'll add it to the metapackage dependencies
Oops: "libpam-gnome-keyring" indeed. Thank you for the correction.
Shouldn't it be libpam instead of ligpam? It unlocks the "login" keyring from
seahorse on user login afaik.
I did a clean install using a separate drive to test if it was an issue with
upgrading. All of the problems persist despite being a fresh install. It
seems to me to be an issue with fildas, not the upgrade process. I've
reinstalled Trisquel 7 for the time being.
I use Icedove and I had to reenter my user password to access those of the
mail server. Or was it to access my GPG key? Or both? Anyway, I installed
the package "ligpam-gnome-keyring" (in Trisquel's repository), rebooted, and
the problem is apparently solved.
You may have seen this message when executing a GTK+ application from the
terminal:

The free software concepts are philosophical and political. Introduce them!
In my university, I give a 1:40-hour talk about free software every semester.
Then, you should indeed show the example and only use and make your students
use free software. Trisquel is certainly the easier
If you save (e.g., on an external drive) the system configuration files (in
/etc) you changed and the list of packages you installed (e.g., with the menu
"File/Save Markings" of the "Synaptic Package Manager"), it should not be
that time-consuming to configure a fresh install of Trisquel 8.
Hi Patrick,
thank you for your answer. Although I agree with the arguments, the home
schooling case as such doesn't apply to me. I teach at a vocational secondary
school and have convinced my headmaster to introduce a paper-free, free
software class from grade 11 thru 13. As this is
From a - let's call it developer's point of view - you're certainly right
concerning Ubuntu. However, my question is (also) asked from a pedagogical
point of view.
The next generation of free software promoters and developers includes
students like mine which are typically 16-20 years old
I just had the same experience with a failure of "do-release-upgrade". I am
very reluctant to change anything in my configuration, since I went to some
lengths to make the machine in question into an audio server that passes all
file formats unchanged to an external DtoA device.
I am able
After installing in Flidas just about every package I can remember using in

more, I reached an impasse with the package Psensor. I use Psensor when

I do not understand what you mean: software runs on a processor, not "between
processors" or "under a processor".
Hi Julius
I home schooling my daughter full time and my son until 10 AM, I am not
exactly a teacher but sort of.
I think Trisquel would be a great assist in a school setting. I have
stopped worrying about the "best" Linux distro and I have instead turned
my focus to the best "shepherd" to
I believe so. You can use 'ppa-purge' (in Trisquel's repository) and have
more success that I did:

What do you want to achieve? "Any educational purpose" is vague.
In general, if something can be achieved on Ubuntu, which is broadly used in
schools, it can be achieved in the exact same way with Trisquel, which is
based on Ubuntu.
What happens if you try to start the display manager?
$ sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
Take a look at the journal:

Greetings to all the people of this community.
I am very interested in using FreedomBox [
https://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/ ] in Trisquel, so I followed the guide,
whose link I share below, aware that it probably wouldn't work, because the
guide was made for Trisquel 5.5:
My General Practitioner recommends GNU plus Linux.

At least you need basic bins like OpenRC, the kernel, nano, a text shell, a
networking text frontend and whose daemons, that's the minimum then you can
install every packages for your own practice.
Peripheral drivers are run between the processor and the peripheral devices
inside the kernel.
Programs are run just under the processor (if requires peripherals will
liaise with the kernel hence periphereal drivers) and using dependent
libraries and needed bins.
The commonly problematic hardware pieces are wifi (as you've told to us) and
BIOS, but if you can't open the case to unplug the nonfree wifi chip then
your last resort will be Purism 'Librem' laptops or ThinkPenguin ones, the
fully new hardware systems. You are just nowhere not to be risky
.
I very much doubt you only run a kernel because your computer would be
useless. See https://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html
Reading and thinking again, I suppose it is related to the ' Unofficial
software packages not provided by Trisquel' part.
Does this mean that I have to uninstall any software installed via other
PPA's (e.g. micahflee's PPA) or downloaded from other sites (e.g.
When running 'do-release-upgrade' I get the following return:

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum (at least as an active member) and being a teacher I'd
like to know whether anyone here has already some experience regarding the
use of Trisquel for any educational purpose. Thanks for sharing.
I already have my open issue #24146, so I do not know if it is alright to ask
for help here too. Please let me know.
The thing is, once the upgrade process finished, I restarted my computer, saw
this new Trisquel 8 water drops image but then the screen turned dark and
nothing can be done
