I don't think it's helpful to tell people to rebase their entire working environment over one little snag. That leads to a dangerous game of constantly re-installing and never getting anything done. Note that there are lots of threads about updating software to newer versions in the forums

Actually they only only need one thing to be learned: compiling from source. That's useful for small packages which don't require new libraries, but not for larger ones such as WebKit in which case my original advise still stands.

There is one even better way, look for a router that has all versions supported. Such as the netgear wndr3800. It has two different versions, one for china, one for everything else so yeah. But, both are supported so yeah. :)

I believe the only versions of virtualbox that was free was from 4.0-4.2. Although virt-manager is way, way better than anything else.

Whenever a piece is hardware is not supported (or badly supported), you can hope that a more recent kernel will solve the problem. It takes a few minutes to try, following the instructions on https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ But, again, I doubt a more recent kernel will support your Wifi

Thank you for the reply. Fn-F8 disables the touchpad and indeed if I disable it I can use a USB mouse fine. This suggests to me that there is something up with the touchpad itself, so I will probably end up having to send it back. However before I do that I'd like to check whether I have
