A Wifi dongle from ThinkPenguin is cheaper than a whole laptop and can save
you a lot of grief.
If that's not within your budget, check h-node and ebay for alternative
dongles.
X60 and X200 are hitting the government surplus sales on ebay and both can be
Librebooted if you're handy.
Great idea, thanks ! It puts it on display for the curious, but without
pushing it and thus becoming unappealing.
What I do is put a link to the email self-defense tutorial guide, as well as
my public key and fingerprint. If it invites even a few people to find out
more then it is a small victory.
upvoted as well
Thorough, well organized, and well explained. It is nice to have all of this
information in one place. I will definitely be returning here many times for
guidance in making some of these changes.
Thank you!

I guess the hardest part is to educate my contacts about it, and make them
install as little additional programs as possible (more to master).
Thanks for the info, I'll study some more about it.
I have an really old IBM ThinkPad T42. Does it qualify for an all free setup?
If you want a free BIOS

If not, of the usual components the GPU and wifi will be the most likely to
give you grey hair.
Thinkpenguin or Minifree come to mind. A new Adele or a refurbished Thinkpad.

So just to be clear, If I were to sell my current computer and buy one with
maximum compatibility with free OS, programs, and security, in mind, what
would I be looking for?
I personally do not fear being persecuted for my political postings and
technology stories, but I can see why social media can be bad for people who
do not wish for these things to be used against them. At least, with GNU

There is a browser add-on called Mailvelope, I believe it is licensed under
the GBU Affero Public License. See here for an explanation:

You can of course use it
Interesting. I suppose I or my contact would have to get the email on the
computer to decrypt it?
I mean let's suppose I check the email while connecting to gmail, and it's
encrypted. The only way to decrypt it is to get a copy offline ?
I'm sure the Firewall has it's use in specific cases.
I agree perhaps on the point of a Firewall. I added it for 'completion', so
to speak. Ufw (and the frontend Gufw) do have some advanced features that
means it is worth mentioning it breifly,

Is a firewall really needed ? I though I've read somewhere that most of the
ports are closed by default on GNU/Linux.
Email encryption : totally worth it if the person you intend to communicate
with doesn't have emails hosted at Google and other non-libre services. But I
might be wrong
Yes, I use NoScript + uBlock Origin (microBlock).
As far as the browzzer is concerned, I go this way:
VPN - firejailed and apparmored TorBB - Internet
or
VPN - firejailed and apparmored Iceweasel with noscript, httpseverywhere,
ublockorigin, RAS, privacy settings.
I'll see if I can make a Live CD using the TAILS instructions, but Libre, and
with grsec etc.
I just became aware of this a few days ago, and It looks nice, but Id need
more information before I trusted it.
Not according to Steven Rambam! He goes on at length explaining how all
social media is recorded and used against people in court, even years and
years after a post, and even where the context is questionable. This is very
true of political and religious post. As an intellectual I hardly use
Should I stop using ZenMate and Ghostery?
Upvoted. This has to be the best post I have ever read regarding
security/privacy. Congrats!
Now we only need a computer and a distro made following these points :)
Also, agree with Magic Banana, only free software is secure to begin with.
Thank you very very much for all of this information. To be honest I have
heard of perhaps half of it, so I will be studying this for some time, likely
one at a time, until I can get a handle on it all. Would you suggest an order
to tackle all of this, being as I am just starting out? Thanks
+Libreboot
There's evidence using an adblocker can help track you because you block
connections to these domains. I think NoScript doesn't block the connections,
just the script from running.
magic banana is right, ghostery and zenmate are indeed proprietary. But, I
know one adblocker/anti tracker you would like, its called ublock origin.
It is absolutely the best at this time. (next to noscript anyways)
I also learned too late just how bad the surveillance is as well.
I regret
VPN + TOR + GNU/LINUX.
You do not need to stop using a mobile phone, either. Purchase a
Replicant-supported mobile phone second hand, and just remove the battery
when you aren't using it. Then people can actually contact you sometimes for
instance if you are meeting up with people at a cafe or in a park, and of
This is an area I am interested in, too.
Let's think about the computer as a 'line of defense' for sensetive
information, such as banking records, private cryptography keys and personal
information.

The first line of defense is Libreboot. Libreboot is:

Having set out to become free (in both the monetary and liberation context of
