Stick to the version of Xfce that's available in your repository. There are
no significant changes anyway.
Now I am with trisquel 7
I have tried many times but it is not work:sudo add-apt-repository

what can I do?
I also don't have that option! What is wrong?

And that is not even the latest version! I can't find an option to reveal the
version. Can you guide me?
...
I suppose that means Devuan repo has a newer version of whisker menu?
I'm on Devuan live USB now. It's got Xfce4 4.10. I installed whisker menu
sudo apt-get install xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin
The 'categories next to panel buttons' is behind the first appearance tab.
Thanks a lot. Now I just need to find instructions of how to understand the
instructions :-)
Example of my uncertainty:
The instruction says:
2. `mkdir build && cd build' to create a location for building.
Don't I have to give it a name? What would be a suitable name in order to not

One guy at the ask-ubuntu site advocates for
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install xfce4
and then
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

Would I afterwards have to update xfce
The 'xfce4-goodies' package is installed. I might give it a go with the gcppa
if compiling is out of reach (for the moment).
I still haven't tried compiling myself. Could this be a nice littel first
project, and can you guide me with/to instructions?h
I think it can be updated by adding a new repo.

Debian 9 has Xfce 4.12
I had this option on Debian 8 too, and that one had xfce 4.10. My bet is your
whiskermenu plugin is of an ancient version too muchy much, mateson. Compile
only that one, no need to compile
Thanks. It leave that idea and perhaps add a PPA for xfce
I doubt it will install. Unmet dependencies.
Would it work to add the Debian repo and install from there? and would that
cause problems in other respects?
The packaged version in Belenos is Xfce4 4.10 only. To upgrade, you have a
few choices: go with Flidas Alpha (don't know if it's packaged yet) or use a
PPA, use Debian 9 Xfce or.. something else like wait until it's there.
http://packages.trisquel.info/belenos/xfce4
I am running version 4.10. I'll try to upgrade.
Thanks
Would I have to download it from e.g. xfce.org in order to get a newer
version?
I see. It must be something that was introduced in a later version of Xfce.
Debian 9 has Xfce 4.12.
I don't have it. And I've only got three tabs there...
...
Hmm, I don't have hat option!
>In your menu you've got the categories to the left. How did you get them

Oh, it's very easy mate, do this: right click on the whiskermenu icon,
properties, tab 'behavior' -> mark 'position categories next to panel
buttons'.
In your menu you've got the categories to the left. How did you get them
there?

Thanks.
Un-installing xfce4 and running sudo update, sudo upgrade and re-installing
xfce4 did it.
(I am not sure it sudo opgrade is really necessary)
Well, it is just a metapackage so accepting and uninstalling it should not
remove any other relevant (to the proper functionality of the OS) dependency,
if none at all.
In order to paste the output of I installed Icecat and was asked to accept
to uninstall xfce4. I wonder why?
I have successfully installed xfce on Trisquel on a number of devices now.
Now I'm trying to get it to work on my 'new' T500 (not librebooted yet) and I
encounter a problem, that I met the other times as well. I am not sure how I
solved it the other times and I have no idea of why it
By the way mentioned above I added "exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator"
Is there any difference from the app launched by your suggestion? I have
never figured out why there are different possible terminal kind of apps.
Thanks.
It's the first time I tried it, but it was quite easy to create a short cut.
The difficult part is to figure out the right command to launch a given
program/app. I copied it from the properties of that entry in the main menu.
I had some problems in the past with that gui method. What always works is
manually editing /home/user/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml file,
and adding an entry in custom section.
Should be in XFCE's keyboard settings then.
Doesn't work. and when I'm using Abrowser, that opens another tab.
Try Ctrl + Alt + T.
In xfce I can't open a terminal by ctrl + t
I suppose this must be normal but why?
And most importantly: Can I get that short cut to work (again)?
Thanks. That did it.
After installing and running xfce I have tried to install a printer. I have
installed this lots of times before but in xfce I find no app to add
printers!
When logging in to the standard DE I can find the add printer function via
setting/configuration (translated from Danish) and it finds

I also would like to flash Libreboot myself
I know what you mean. That one reason why I supplemented my x200 with a
MacBook2,1 :-)
If imac 5,2 works for libreboot, tell the libreboot devs how you did it.
I could do that, but here are a few other advantages (for me at least) to
having a separate desktop like having your documents and pictures on two
computers in case a hard drive fails, better sound (this could be solved by
external speakers for the laptop, too). I also would like to flash
Yeah, I reckon. How about a dock with attached larger display and keyboard?
Two displays can be convenient.
I am planning to buy an imac 5,2 and flash Libreboot on it. It uses the same
ROM as the macbook 2,1. If the macbook has some weird problems, the imac
might also have them. But if you say the macbook works, I will just try and
see how it goes.
Generally I'ld say it works fine. I still haven't had the time to work a lot
with it so I have almost only done some email (Icedove) and web (Abrowser).
So far I'm happy. This is more or less the first time I work on an Apple
computer and I still need to get used to some keys different
This is good and enlightening information. But I am a little worried about
the use of "think". Do you have the knowledge and insight to seek (and

Arc just happens to be a very complex one. I see no difference in terms of
performance, and I have a very old laptop. :)
This doesn't answer any of your questions, but I wanted to ask if there are
any quirks with the macbook not mentioned on the Libreboot website. So are
there any?
Thanks
Thanks. That looks good.
Is there any performance issues with themes? That is, will complex themes eat
the machines memory?
>...it looks like it's running on some old MS machine in safe mode.
:D
True, by default Xfce is not very sexy. But you can make it look very nice
very easily.
I am currently using the Arc gtk theme, with the Arc icon theme (inheriting
moka icons).
This is how it looks (I just set the
Thanks for pointing me to consider that as well. I was actually only

Thanks. Now I got Whisker running and I'm a happy man.
About downloading themes via xfce-look.org, do you automatically trust that
software?
1. You can make XFCE look like anything you want if you look for more
themes. A good place is here: http://www.xfce-look.org/
2. If you right click on the panel and then select Panel, and then Panel

No, xfwm has not a true tiling mode.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfwm#Window_tiling
It's called xmonad! :D
I am fine with the xfwm really, I just want to make it do what I want it to
do, lol.
If I were to replace xfwm with xmonad, would I still have my windows themed
the way I want them, or are the themes only for xfwm?
grimlok
You would retain your window settings as long as the xfsettingsd daemon is
still running.
Hello all,
I was wondering, for those of you who have some XFCE experience, if
there was a way to make XFCE's window manager open each new window side by
side instead of directly on top of each other. I would even go for a
cascading effect if that's all I could do.
Note: The
I created a bug report in hope the bug will be fixed sooner. I didn't do it
earlier because xfce4 that came with Trisquel 6 worked.
[#12680]
Here is a script that will hopefully fix your problem.
Download it, make it executable and run it from a console.
Related issue: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/7610
Thank you very much, that worked like a charm. This bug has been around for
years though, why hasn't it been fixed?
Hey guys, I tried using synaptic to add xfce4 and xfce4-goodies and I'm
having problems, specifically with installing xfce4-session. The error is as
follows:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/xfce4-session_4.10.1-3ubuntu5_amd64.deb: trying to
overwrite '/etc/xdg/autostart/xscreensaver.desktop',
I would suggest you to make a new wiki page with this information.
Fellows,
I only found this: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trixquel-trisquel-con-xfce
which is in Spanish and is blocked. I want to share how I manged to do this,
and I don't know if I should make a new manual for it. So, I will show it in
the next post, just in case that I have to change
I don't have time to go through all the process right now (I will continue
later), but basically, you have to do this (use with care, and let me know if
it worked; more references will come):
Remove any display manager
Make sure there is no $HOME/.xinitrc (or that it sources
Thank you BugRep! That worked like a charm.
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/xfce
In this (now locked) thread, BugRep kindly provided a script for fixing the
error that obstructs installing XFCE 4.10. Unfortunately, the error remains,
but the script no longer works for 6.0.1. Could someone provide me with an
up-to-date workaround
I have now tested installing Trisquel 32bit, 64bit, LXDE and gnome edition.
Even netinstall. The result below:
Tested with 32bit version of Trisquel mini but with the same error:

What about Right click on panel - Panel Settings - Appearance?
There's a setting there for the background, but not the text.
In any case, I got it solved elsewhere. You can install GTK-Theme-Config
using the instructions on this page.
Not sure, but I think is defined in the selected gtk2 theme.
In /usr/share/themes/your_theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc or
~/.themes/your_theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
How can I change the colour of the panel text in XFCE? I suspected it was
somewhere in /usr/share/themes, but couldn't find anything there.
Save the script.
Open terminal window and go to the directory you saved the script in with the
cd command.
You can run it with sh command:
sh script_name
For general purposes it is better to make the script executable:
chmod +x script_name
And then run it with:
./script_name
Seems to have gotten it. Thank you very much!
Rebuilding the package should work.
You will only have to change the versions in the build process.
After you install the package you have built, you can safely dist-upgrade.
If you have tried to dist-upgrade before, I will help you resolve the issues.
How does one run a script exactly?

Bumping again because my post got knocked way down by the spammer.
I need to revive this thread - there's now an update for

Does anyone know how I can get the update?

I'll come back to this thread if I notice anything funny in the next couple

Since Trisquel is currently always based on an Ubuntu version, you are stuck
to the software versions which reside in the corresponding Ubuntu
repositories.
So unless you compile XFCE in version 4.10 or (if available) use a PPA, you
are stuck to 4.0.
When in doubt, this index is also really useful to find your packages :)
http://packages.trisquel.info/
Wow, thank you! I actually kind of have it working via those ppas, but I
took a ridiculously naive route and I expect I'll find kinks because of that.
By naive, I mean moreso than you probably think - I tried installing it
and synaptic showed a list of the packages it was trying to install
