I don't know if your mother-in-law's library offers it, but where I am, they offer inter-library loans. Their online catalog will allow you to see the books in other libraries and let you order them. The library takes care of shipping. It's really great because I'm in a small town with just one

Turns out I misunderstood the wife's question (she'd be shocked, I'm sure). My mother-in-law does frequent the library, but has pretty much read through all their books that interest her, so she's looking to rent actual books by mail. The eReader is a separate issue. Thanks for your suggestions.

The big question is: Do you want to read the e-reader outside, especially in the sun? If so, the Kindle 3 or the B&N Nook Touch with their e-ink platform are the best, easily visible in the brightest sunshine and easier on the eyes (eye fatigue with e-readers is a real consideration) than back-lit
