did you remember to configure a template for you pagetree? Usually this is
caused by no "activation" of TemplaVoila in the template
page = PAGE
page.typeNum = 0
page.10 = USER
page.10.userFunc = tx_templavoila_pi1->main_page

Nothing to do with templavoila... You will get the same result with standard
templating too if PAGE is missing...

I have to migrate a static site which displays the number of subpages
behind the each menu entry. How can I set that up in TS? counting just
the next level would be enough. I reckon I could just run an SQL query
and feed my TS from there but is there a more elegant way?

the main menu does show up right, but when one clicks on any link it

the language is "1", this means cn cannot be used as it is equal to 2.
I bet this is the reason your links are not working.

I use typo3 4.2.1 and i've TV 1.3.6 installed and creating new content
elements results in a blank page. Example content installed by TV itself
works properly and is editable.
Any sugestions or someone with similar problem ?

I am sorry that i did not explain my question clearly. if the BE user
forget his password, there should be a module at the entrance of the
back end. User can input his username or email address, and the
extension cwt_resetbepassword can send the initialized password to
user predefined email
