I see in the setup.txt file there are some styles so I added one in there for
table cels, i just tried to add a border, but those styles don't seem to get
used on the page - the setup.txt was generated by extension builder and I just
added the style and then uploaded the file, removed and reins

ok, got the snippet to work by dumping it into my controller and doing a few
other details like changing the name of the extension (mediadatabase) to my
own, creating the css file under Public instead of putting styles in setup.txt
, etc.
I guess I do the same for other files like js etc.

That seems interesting but very involved, I think I would first need to understand alot about using typoscript in setup. For instance the example references fileadmin rather than Resources/Public. Is fileadmin supposed to be a directory inside my extension?

I am using typo3 6.1.5 and I am trying to use the crawler to index the
pagetree.
I have created a Crawler Configuration on the pageroot and checked
tx_indexedsearch_reindex.
Under "Processing instruction parameters" I added &L=[0-3] (I actually have
4 languages in this site).

I have less than a year experience with typo3 and I can understand your
situation. My advice if you need to change something on the template, is to
make a copy of the original first on another document on notepad or wherever.
But so you can copy paste again if the changes you made
