One thing not mentioned so far is that if you want to (or have to) upgrade your O/S, you may very well have to upgrade the database as well. Why on earth would a company support anything without a revenue stream? Support pays for the people required to provide it. It's great that a small to mid size business can get 10-20 years out of an IT investment. But, they should be prepared to make a big move when the ole mini finally spirals

I believe it is IBM current policy that if your maintenance lapses, you are required to repurchase your license to be able to reinstate maintenance which is required for any upgrades. Obviously somewhat severe but intended as so. I suppose you would need to weigh the savings over expected time
