I missed something else on first read. Your using KDE4 where im still
on 3 for familiarities sake. No idea how this works with KDE4.

Actually i didn't know how to do this myself and had to look it up but
its so simple i almost kicked myself.
Right click the K Menu icon and choose Menu Editor.
Actually after rereading this its not quite what your after but may do
the job for you anyways.

hardware is required what sort of hardware is needed?
Im sure some of us have fairly decent equipment hanging around we dont
need and would be happy to donate it if required. It is the box that
runs our Local server and we should support it.

Any reason you dont want to go with an Intel? personally id recommend

Anything based on an Intel chipset is usually a safe bet for *nix
