Rob is correct - recent Ubuntu ISO images should be directly bootable
when dded to a USB flash drive. This has been the case since at least
16.04, probably earlier, for at least amd64 images (I'd presume i386
images, too, but amd64 are the only ones I use, so I can't vouch for
them personally).
G
Think they are hybrid images.

An iso file is actually a DVD/CD image rather than a disk image and so
can't be directly written to a disk via dd.
Instead use something like 'usb-creator' to take the iso image and put it
on the disk in the right layout etc.

Recently I have downloaded Linus iso images and loaded them to storage
disks. The first was lubuntu to a TF card to be used with an OrangePi
One and the second, this week, ubuntu 17.04 to one of my desktop PC's
HDDs. I used the standard terminal command for this loading procedure.

Thanks for that Joel.
I may have been unclear but I was actually referring to how ZFS works over
networks.

Hi Geoffrey,
It is a shortened version of distribution. As Linux is just a kernel, a
distro is when someone assembles the kernel with a collection of
applications and tools, such a the GNU utilities which are commonly used
by all distros, X for the GUI, GNOME for a desktop environment, firefox

I believe it's short for 'distribution'. When people are talking about their
distro (or creating a new distro) they are talking about their version of
Linux (or creating a new version of Linux).
There are many variants of Linux all aimed at a different target audience

The oft-seen, in this context, word 'distro' is not in my lexicon nor in

No problem making your own distro, just do it yourself. Don't make a
word document and do a horrible design in MS paint upload it to an
UBUNTU mailing list and expect anyone to give a sh(-1^1/2)t. :)
