Rob is correct - recent Ubuntu ISO images should be directly bootable when dded to a USB flash drive. This has been the case since at least 16.04, probably earlier, for at least amd64 images (I'd presume i386 images, too, but amd64 are the only ones I use, so I can't vouch for them personally). G
