I think it's best that no firewall is applied by default. For example, a
firewall on each computer of a home network would be an unnecessary
complication, as a firewall at the router provides sufficient security
for the whole network in most cases.

They are open by default. I have verified this with my use of programs
such as Transmission that can test open ports. If you use ufw or some
other firewall, ports will of course be closed with default rules (which
