I've e-mailed the reporter of the Debian bug to try and get some more
information about what the problem was. I'll follow up on this bug if we
can figure out.

I've installed libgdata from the backports archive and checked with (a)
prepackaged Evolution 3.2 as well as with (b) a freshly built Evolution 'git
master', both worked well.
