Craig: I setup static IP using the nm-applet, not by editing the
/etc/network/interfaces by hand. In 8.04, it disables networking

Further research finally led to a solution:

I deleted the XDG_DESKTOP_DIR-line from ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs,
installed xdg-user-dirs, ran xdg-user-dirs-update, logged out and in
again and everything was nice and dandy - again. My
Public bug reported:
Both /var/log/gdm/:0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log are flooded with lines
like the following:

I am unable to activate/deactive the bluetooth or wireless using Fn+F5
on a Thinkpad X61s UK43JUK. Looking at the output of /var/log/acpid it
