same problem here. I just installed a fresh ubuntu from 10.10 beta iso
and when i tried to reboot it didn`t came up again. After removing
quiet splash option from grub i saw as last message:

When Kubuntu 10.04 LTS became available I installed it (back in May I believe).
The bug is not present in 10.04, the hub in my Dell monitor works fine. I don't
know about anything between 8.04 and 10.04, so not sure what/when fixed it.

I solved this on my machine by,
Go to the System menu, then Administration and Hardware Drivers
Select the latest version (recommended) nvidia driver. (bottom option)
Let it download, select apply and restart.
This should install a later version eg 195, which seems to resolve the problem.

The problem is in the both the Ambiance color theme as well as the
Radiance color theme.
I also wanted to note that aside from that problem, I really like the
update to the 10.04 themes, I especially like the checkboxes and the
slightly-dusty look of the buttons.

For me it's ok to close the bug, that is no longer present in more recent
versions of radeon driver and virtualbox.
(if a bug is considered more than 2 years after its first report it has not so
much sense anyway...)
