Hi Chuck,
It was just a once-off thing. I had to reboot and run a partial upgrade
to finish off the process, and after that I messed around with
auto.master again (I think I had to reapply my changes to it to get my
old version back again) and all was fine.

During an upgrade from latest Karmic (21/6/10) to Lucid, the autofs
upgrade asked me whether to use the package maintainer's version of
auto.master or keep the existing one. At that stage the keyboard and
mouse were both inactive, so the only
