update-initramfs is assuming that /var/lib/firmware/`uname -r` exists, and runs
find on the directory multiple times (only to find it doesn't exist).
it would be preferable if it checked for the directories existence, then only
tried to register firmware from it if it does

Login also fails when using en_US.UTF8, so i assume its not locale
specific.
