I have a hint about this issue. gnome-system-monitor is crashing only when opening as user the Filesystems tab. Change the following key in gconf and you'll be able to use at least the other tabs: /apps/procman/current_tab. It is set to 3 per default (the Filesystems tab). Change it to some value
