It seems that still didn't fix it permanently.
At a certain ppoint things got really messed up.
Normally I have sda1+sdb1=md0 sda2+sdb2=md1 and sda3+sdb3=md2 on said system.
At one point md2 got somehow created from sda and sdb, md0 and md1 were then
created from md2p1 and md2p2 (!!).
And this

reinstalling hardy (thinking it was a problem with the partition
creation - gparted bug) but the same.

Modify
I solved this issue by purging then reinstalling cups-pdf.
Then when adding a PDF printer I noticed the cups printername must be at
least 4 characters (if not APPLY is greyed out). My cups-pdf printer on
Karmic only had 3 chars ('PDF') - maybe the issue is related to that?

OK, this bug regressed for me after upgrading to Karmic.
I still had the script (pdftops) mentioned earlier in this bug report, using
dpkg-divert
I removed the divert and restored the pdftops.real, but no difference.
I checked the tools on

Modify settings or unsubscribe
I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (Gnome, Pidgin, musictracker plugin and
rhythmbox) and encountered that same error after installing a KDE
applications, which brought in some KDE libs. After the following
startup (= restart pidgin I guess?) it bumped up.
So somehow Piding must be compiled to use some kde
don't have any knowledge on a development
level.

Solution confirmed here also. Installing updates killall nautilus
triggered all that is needed.

Hey,
The app /usr/bin/software-properties-gtk seems to do a simple ping
test of a list of mirrors. You can find a list of mirrors[1] and
script a simple, similar test.
It's not really the speed test that matters to me actually.
