Figured out that it is the internal GFX (intel i915) interacting with the PCI-E
(Nouveau). I can prevent this happening on the installed system (10.04 +
2.6.38) but killing/renaming the i915 module. At which point it boots through
to X.

As the install progress the progress bar rises to about 80%, it then
jumps back to 41% as it 'configures the keyboard'. After which it
returns to about 80% and continues as expected.

With the onboard GFX card (Intel I815) it also fails in a similar
manner, Live CD does boot into graphical enviroment on another PC.
The failing PC is a Compaq Deskpro EN, which works fine (both onboard
and Matrox GFX) with 8.10.

Whilst it's good news that it's really pinned down to the watch dog,
it's probably not the best solution just to turn it off (unless it can

BTW the preview (right arrow in Journal) is empty until the Clipboard is
viewed with Browse, and then it shows a smaller version of the 'not
found') screen.

After lfaraone said it worked for him, I tried a few couple of different
USB sticks, both worked OK but the original one still failed.
Lexar 1GByte - worked, mounted first partition of 2 (sdb1 = VFAT) and displayed
the contents of /media/LEXAR/syslinux (yes this is a Fedora bootable USB of

1). I am an idiot. The Sandisk is only 512MByte version, so it unlikely
to be an issue with large disks.
2). If I insert a 'working' USB key with sugar-emulator running it is
sometimes mounted UID=1000 (my user ID) and sometimes mounted UID=500.
