This is a little random...
Upstart technically just runs hal the same way that sysvinit used to,
except for one small detail ... the stdin/out/err of the init script
will be /dev/null instead of /dev/console.
Try adding console output to /etc/event.d/rc2 and see whether that
fixes the problem.

I'm using the Alternative install CD for Kubuntu, Edgy Eft, Knot 2. I
have two 120GB drives (PATA, Seagate), and I'm trying to set up software
RAID1 across them. I have an Athlon 2800+ with a KT400 chipset.
Here are the steps I follow:
1) [All of the setup prior to the partitioner starting.]
I concur. In addition even if I run /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start as
root, nothing happens. This might be a scripting issue. Started by
simply issuing avahi-daemon works just fine.

DCOP calls to change volume also insist on using PCM here, but I've
never filed a bug because it seems my volume consists of equal parts

I'm not sure if the attachments I mentioned went through by email. Here

bugzilla issue #17342 is Bug #23513 in launchpad which, oddly enough is
the very bug I made that comment in. I have no idea why my comment has
a link to the bug in it.
I do think this sounds like the same issue. Your find that susepend is
simply not supported with this driver looks promising.
