Ah, I think I see what the problem is. Since it didn't detect the
monitor, it set the wrong resolutions up. This is a dupe of 3731
apparently.
Change your screen section to look like this:

symptoms and Automatix does sigkill dpkg (look at the source if you doubt)

I have the same problem (HDA intel, on a Dell D620). Any application
that try to access the microphone hangs or crashes.

Have you had luck getting a good screenshot or photo from the other
system so far?
A couple things I'd like to clarify:
First, does the corruption go away if you set your resolution to the
same as the person you're changing from? I.e., does the problem depend
on switching users
As for the automatically adjust the volume, no go. If I set the sound
settings to the lowest... it doesn't warn me or adjust it. Perhaps a
small dialog to make sure your sound it correct. For example, have an
adjustment bar, I know, you are trying to avoid it. But until we get
auto configuratio
I can't test it now due to my soundcard sounding like a helecopter when
it is running in ekiga. Your going to have to talk to Sladen about that
