im having the same problem in my Asus A8JP.
sometimes the sound comes on, i can tell because i can hear the fuzz, and the
volume of the fuzz changes as i change the volume. however, as soon as i start
playing something through rhythmbox or xmms and try and adjust the volune, it
mutes itself.
